. the future of the u.s. troop residency in afghanistan is front and center this week. president obama expected to meet afghanistan's president, hamid karzai at the white house friday. focus to make sure there's a smooth security handover to the afghan government when nato forces leave afghanistan next year. it's still unclear how many u.s. troops will remain to train afghan security forces and focus on counterterrorism. chris lawrence outlines the proposals for the transition. >> reporter: the options are on the table. at the low end, a little more than 6,000 troops, mostly special operations forces hunting terrorists with a small amount of training for afghan forces. the 10,000 option would still focus on al qaeda, but would add conventional troops to expand afghan training. a 15,000 option would include even more conventional troops to go on limited patrols and give afghans even more support. some experts say, forget that last option. 15,000. >> it's not politically tenable in congress, it's not doable of a budget execution perspective. >> reporter: analyst stephanie sanok worked in baghdad

about today. president obama welcomes afghanistan's president hamid karzai. the two will discuss the nature of the troop presence in afghanistan after 2014, which is when the nato combat mission is declared over. the obama administration floated the idea of removing american troops all together. president karzai met with secretary of state clinton last night over dinner. and joe biden plans to deliver recommendations from the gun control task force to the president on tuesday. yesterday, the vice president met with representatives on various sides of the issue. the former head of a movie industry group argued movies aren't behind the violence. the nra step ahead way from discussions and said they were in attack of second amendment. dan lothian has been following developments for us this morning. sol folks said they see some consensus in some areas. when you listen to what the nra said, they sounded very disappointed with the meetings. >> that's right. we sort of expect thad coming in. it wasn't a very big, bold expectation from the nra, saying they were coming to simply listen to

obama making another cabinet pick. the president will nominate white house chief of staff jack lew to replace timothy geithner as treasury secretary. tell us about jack lew. >> jack lew is the chief of staff known as a tough negotiator, someone who the president has complete trust in. in fact, when he was announced as the white house chief of staff the president talked about the trust that he had in him, talked about how he had taken a part in helping to right the ailing economy. this is also someone who has worked in a couple of administrations as the budget chief in this administration and the clinton administration and helped to cut the 1997 balanced budget deal. so the white house sees him as someone with a lot of experience, ready to take on some of the big challenges over the treasury department as we are facing the so-called mini cliffs, the big one, the debt ceiling, something he will have to deal with right away. >> when is the formal announcement of the nomination expected and another partisan fight down the road? >> very well could be. we have been trying to nail it down

responsibility. melissa: barack obama's first title -- when he came into office, he said no longer will we kick the can down the road. we will have this very serious process. continuing resolutions and that is where we get all of these tactics under goodies. it is a terrible process. melissa: is in a matter of a difference between revenues and outlays? >> you start by just having a budget. melissa: do they have to balance or do you just need a plan of some type? >> i would love to have them balance. they are terrified of saying what they want to cut. even if you believe that federal spending at a minimum has to be $3.7 trillion, which both sides believe, i do not. you will have to make tough choices because medicare and social security are swallowing up larger portions of the budget. you have to have a public thorough process about what else you will squeeze, cut and trim. melissa: why would they ever do it again. it seems like there is only downside. >> they have to pay the political penalty. it takes politicians who actually have the courage to say, yes, we will cut this. we do not need this

now a very critical meeting agains between president obama and hamid karzai. as kyla campbell reports the outcome could determine how many american troops come home this year. kyla. >> reporter: dave more than 60,000 u.s. troops are in afghanistan right now. president obama has not determined how many will leave the middle east this year. the u.s. war on terror in afghanistan officially ends next year. u.s. and nato forces are set to leave by the year of 2014. this year afghan forces are supposed to take the lead in security and that means thousands of u.s. traps could return home. but president obama is open to keeping anywhere from 3,000 to 15,000 u.s. troops in afghanistan. after the end of the war next year. the u.s. leaders want to make sure afghan officials can run their government and security without america's help. plus the pentagon wants karzai's word that the afghan security forces will keep the taliban from setting up shop as soon as the u.s. pulls out its troops.
